New
exhibitions for 2008
HM Customs
This exhibition centres around the recent donation
to the museum's collection of an illuminated address presented to
the Principal Officer of Her Majesty's Customs by the people of
Queenstown in 1895. It endeavours to explore the complex nature
of the role of the revenue officers, boatmen and the water-guard
working in and around the harbour at a time when emigration and
mercantile trade were some of the greatest means of incoming revenue.
Through the artefact collection on display we see how these men
detected illegal substances on ships, and gauged products for importation.
"Showtime"
This display highlights Cobh's recreational and
leisure pursuits throughout the course of the last century. We see
a colourful array of artefacts related to the opera, theatre, bands
and dancehalls resulting from a wide range of interests among people
in the town. This exhibition opened on May 17th to celebrate the
european "Night of the Museums"
